What is Pickleball?

Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — whose kids were bored with their summertime activities. Pickleball is an indoor or outdoor racket/paddle sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Two players (singles), or four players (doubles), hit a perforated hollow ball back and forth over a 36-inch-high net using solid-faced paddles. Pickleball paddles are smaller than tennis racquets but larger than ping-pong paddles. Courts measure 20×44 feet and are striped similar to a tennis court, with right and left service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net (referred to as the “kitchen”). The rules are simple and the game is easy to learn. For those familiar with the game, it can become an exciting, fast-paced competition. Try it yourself through any of our pickleball programs!
