Synagogues of Akko: Photographs by Rabbi Jonathan Gross
After the war of independence in 1948 Jewish people were able to return to Akko after being chased out by the Arab riots of the 1930s. Since then, Jewish people from all over the world have come to resettle and rebuild Akko's Jewish community.
The city boasts over 70 synagogues each one with a unique history, culture, and heritage. In the summer of 2008 Rabbi Jonathan Gross spent a week in Akko searching out these synagogues and learning their stories. His photo journal illustrates Akko's rich ethic and cultural diversity, as well as some of the rich history of the ancient Israeli city. |

Considering Freedom: A multicultural teen photography exhibition
Teens from Omaha and Israel recently joined forces to showcase an extremely special photography exhibition. Stemming from photography classes in their respective countries, the teens joined together to create a display of "freedom" based on their perspectives. The exploration of the practice and concept of freedom is particularly important for both sets of teens. Through the creation of this exhibit, the teens examined differences between the American and Israeli cultures and the typical expectations placed upon people their age. American teens typically go off to college, while the Israeli teens typically enlist in the military. This exhibit is a powerful visual interpretation of how the universal concept off freedom can take on many forms.
